Photography can employ a lot of different techniques depending upon whom you ask or talk to about it. We all know that a clear shot generally constitutes a good photo, but there is so much more to a photo than that. Take some time to better your skills by using the tips below.

Pay attention to your light. The lighting in a photograph can bring a subject into better focus or change the mood of the picture. Different lighting setups will result in very different photographs. Avoid harsh direct lighting on your subject’s face, as this will generally cause them to squint.

Use manual white balance to spice up your photos. It is possible to let the camera decide the proper white balance for a given environment, but sometimes the camera will get it wrong and the photo will look washed out. Using a manual white balance also allows you to take artsy photos with sepia tones, for instance.

Do not shoot in full daylight. You are going to get some of your best photos on an overcast day. The bright sunlight can cause overexposure, loss of detail and terrible shadows. Shoot at dusk or at dawn on days that are not cloudy for optimum results in your photos.

A good photography tip is to always trust your instincts. If you suddenly have the urge to get a shot of something, go for it! Don’t let doubt get in your way. You might look back at your work and decide that spontaneous shot you took represents you.

Remember that photography is a good activity to practice alone. Your friends might get impatient and rush you while you are composing your pictures. If you have friends who enjoy taking pictures, do not let their vision influence your own compositions. The social aspect of photography comes later when you can look at your pictures with your friends.

Positioning of the subject can make the difference between a good photo and a great photo. The subject should rarely be dead center in the middle of the photo. When taking your photo, try to position the subject in the upper, or lower third of the image. This effect works best when there is a horizon in the distance.

Photography is an art! Create an illusion. The camera is a tool for you to show the world the way you see it or want it to be. Learn how to use it. You can make an object appear taller or smaller or set it in a particular atmosphere if you work on colors and exposure.

A great photography tip is to try out different lenses. A cool lens you can try is the fish eye lens. With the fish eye lens you end up with a lot of neat distortion around the center of the image. It can make your photographs much more interesting.

A good photograph should capture only a part of something. You do not need to get a panoramic vision when you can find the right detail that says it all. You should learn how to look for something that will speak to people and convey the meaning you are looking for.

When you are dealing with low lighting settings and you do not have a tripod, try to be aware of your shutter speed. Make sure it has a denominator that is greater than the focal length of the lens. Otherwise, you will not be able to capture sharp images.

It is true that you should have a clear shot of the subject in a photo. That said, there is much more to a good photo than just that. You can always improve upon your shots, and hopefully these tips gave you advice on how you can do precisely that.
