If you are interested in pursuing photography, you probably have questions like where do you start? Are you uncertain about how to frame a shot or what lighting suits which mood? Even if you can boast ten years of experience in the photography field, it can never hurt to bone up on your knowledge a bit.

Don’t rely on your camera’s zoom. Get a close as possible before you start to use your zoom. Zooming in can be helpful, but after a while the picture can get distorted. You’re better off getting as close to the subject as you can before you try to zoom in on it.

A really good photography trick is to pay close attention to angles. Angles can be very helpful when you’re planning a composition. They can point towards certain things you want to focus on, creating a visual path for the viewer’s eye to travel. Make good use of them.

Your arms should be positioned close to the body when you hold the camera, and your hands should be on both the bottom and the sides to keep the camera steady. This keeps the shaking to a minimum and your shots will be more clear. By cradling the camera from below, it will help to prevent you from dropping the camera accidentally.

A good photography tip is to try and be helpful when you’re offering criticism. Don’t just tell someone that their photograph is nice, or that you like it. Tell them specifically what you like about it, and why you think it makes the photograph strong. The same goes for what you don’t like about the photograph.

The key to taking good photographs is to always remember that lighting is the most important thing. Think about lighting all the time. It does not matter what the source of the lighting is, but it is the elemental part of any photograph. Use the sun, a streetlight, a spotlight or even the computer screen to capture any light and make a great photograph.

Consider your photo angles before you shoot. Look through your cameras view finder to see how the background and foreground interact. Check for odd shapes, or things that will detract from what you were thinking when you decided to take the shot. Taking a second to compose your craft will improve your pictures.

Just like it is recommended for an artist to keep some paper and a writing utensil on them at all times, a photographer should always keep a camera on them too. You never know when a photo opportunity will present itself, so you need to be prepared at all times.

Don’t just rely on straight on flash from your camera for your shots. That only guarantees a burst of frontal lighting. Get a little more creative and try to create soft lighting conditions. How do you do that with flash, you ask? You can do that by bouncing your flash off of a wall or ceiling.

Ordinarily, the subject makes “eye contact” with the lens of the camera. For some unique pictures, try to have your subject look off the camera, have them focus on something outside the field of view of the camera. You could also try to have the people in the picture look at something in the frame.

Getting good at photography requires constant research and practice. There are numerous things to keep in mind about photography, and one is that there is not one right or wrong way to do anything. Apply the tips laid out here and use them to your advantage so you can take gorgeous photographs.
